Erie, Pa. – Another year, another win in the NCAA Tournament for the Post University men's soccer team. This time, it was an upset over No. 3 seed Mercyhurst in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Super Region 1 on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Eagles - seeded sixth in Super Region 1 - advanced to the round of 16 for the second time, the first since 2019.
It was also the first loss of the season for the Lakers, who were 19-0-1 coming into the game and were the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champions.
The Eagles will now take on No. 2 Charleston in the round of 16 on either Thursday or Friday. Charleston won the 2019 Division II NCAA Title and were runner-up last season.
A scoreless first half had little offensive opportunities for either team, with no shots on net by either team.
In the second half, the Eagles pushed the pace with various opportunities, finally breaking through in the 77
th minute as after Mercyhurst attempted to clear the ball after a corner,
Omar Florindo stole the ball and took a shot from the top of the box for his second goal of the season. Both of his goals have come in the postseason. He also scored the game-tying goal in the CACC Semifinal win over Wilmington.
Post continued to put pressure on the Lakers defense, and scored their second goal of the game as
Aritz Uriate Alonso streaked down the field, and ran a give and go with
Carles Aliberch, who passed the ball back to Alonso, who hit a low shot past Mercyhurst goalkeeper, Jonathan Gomes to put the Eagles up 2-0.
Post's defense was relentless, not allowing one shot on goal throughout the match.
The Eagles are now 16-3-2 overall. The 16 wins matches the 2019 team for the most wins in a season by the men's soccer team.
The win over Mercyhurst marks the third straight season the Eagles have defeated a school from the PSAC in the NCAA Tournament.
