Holmes Scores 17 As Men’s Basketball Picks Up Opening Game Win Over SCSU

Bridgeport, CT.  – Isaiah Holmes scored 17 points and the Post University men's basketball team put on a defensive clinic in a 64-53 win over Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) on Saturday afternoon at the Bridgeport Classic.

Post held the Owls 33.9 percent shooting overall and 7-for-24 (29.2 percent) from three in the game.

Post opened up to a 7-3 lead early on as baskets from Harrison Warnock, D.J. Frechette and a David Jasson three gave the Eagles the points early on. The Owls rallied, taking a 18-14 lead on a dunk from Zack Penn, but the Eagles would allow just four points over the final 10:53 of the half as Holmes scored six points down the stretch and the Eagles had threes from Cape Holden and Warnock to lead 32-22 at the half.

The Eagles extended its lead to 15 points at 40-25 after four points from Warnock and a bucket from Tyler Small and Holmes to begin the half.

The Owls cut the deficit to 42-37 with 8:51 remaining, but back-to-back layups from Collins Onyeike and Quest Harris put the Eagles back up 46-37. The Eagles wouldn't lead by less than nine points the rest of the way and hit nine of their ten free throws over the final 5:16 of the game to ward off any comeback attempt by SCSU. Holmes scored 11 of his points in the second half, including 4-for-4 from the field.

Warnock finished the game with 14 points. Abdul-Basit Ajia had a team-high 11 rebounds to go with four points. David Jasson had six points.

Off the bench, Quest Harris had nine points on 4-for-7 from the field.  Onyeike had seven rebounds and three blocks.

Post outrebounded the Owls, 43-32 and had ten second chance points to SCSU's seven.

The Eagles will be right back in action on Sunday in Bridgeport as they take on Southern New Hampshire University at 1 p.m.
