Waterbury, CT – The Post University men's soccer team started their quest for a fourth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament championship as the Eagles defeated Caldwell, 4-1 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
The top-seeded Eagles will now face fourth seeded Wilmington on Friday at 10 a.m. on the campus of Holy Family.
Post broke through with the first goal of the game at the 29
th minute, as
Gentian Selimi took a pass from
Francisco Sousa, ripping a low line drive that went off the right post and into the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Five minutes later Caldwell tied it on a goal from Israel Dos Santos Neto, and both teams went into the half knotted up, 1-1.
The Eagles broke the deadlock and then some at the 64
th minute when a long ball from
Davide Mazza found
Finn Lanser, who crossed it to
Aritz Uriate Alonso just inside the box, who put it home for his fifth goal of the season.
Just four minutes later,
Sergio Sanchez – the back-to-back All-CACC First Team member got in on the action as a loose ball found him about 35 yards out and hit a hard low bouncing shot into the net for his second goal of the season.
Post put a bow on the game in the 85
th minute as
Nicholas Anagnostiadis scored his sixth of the season as a ball passed into the box by
Finn Lanser was headed by
Andrea Berti to him and it was easily put away to make it a 4-1 game.
The Eagles outshot the Cougars, 14-7 overall with ten shots on goal.
In net,
Soren Jensen had one save for Post.
The win is the tenth straight for the Eagles in CACC tournament play, dating back to 2018 which started its run of three consecutive CACC titles. Post has also won its last six matches against Caldwell.
Post is now 13-3-2 on the season. It is the fourth straight season the Eagles have won 12 or more games.
The Cougars finish up their season at 5-10-3.
