Football Loses Thriller Against Saint Anselm

Waterbury, CT - The Post University football team lost a close 24-20 game to Saint Anselm on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium.

With the Eagles down 7-0 early, Roberto Salas began the drive for the Eagles with a 78 yard touchdown run, a career-long at the 8:05 mark, tying the game, 7-7.

The Skyhawks would score two more touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 19 yard touchdown pass from Drew Willoughby to Carson Goda with 26 seconds left as they took a 21-7 lead into the half.

Post caught a huge break to begin the second half, recovering a muffed kickoff that was recovered by Michael Are and beginning the drive at the Saint Anselm 32 yard line. After converting a fourth and 7 pass to Christian Collin for 18 yards, the Eagles would score two plays later on a Broghean McGovern ten yard touchdown pass to Joshua Tracey to make it a 21-13 game after the extra point was blocked.

Saint Anselm added a field goal in the third, and the on the ensuing possession, McGovern hit Collin Jermaine Tillery for 24 yards and Collin for 15 yards before the Eagles would score three plays later on a McGovern touchdown run from three yards out making it a 24-20 Saint Anselm lead.

The Eagles had an opportunity to take the lead after the defense stopped the Skyhawks in the redzone after an interception from Jameer Campbell in the endzone with 6:37 left. However, the Eagles were unable to convert a fourth and 6 play from the Saint Anselm 38 yard line and the Skyhawks ran out the clock the rest of the way.

McGovern finished the day 18-for-31 with a touchdown pass and 200 yards. Salas finished with 90 yards on 12 carries. Collin caught six balls for 72 yards. Tracey caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Antwan Walden had two interceptions for the Eagles. He now has five on the season to lead the team. Jadyn Fleeting had seven tackles. Jameer Campbell had five tackles and the interception. Regan Cherry and Jalen Dukes each had a sack.

JC King had 114 yards on 17 attempts rushing and a touchdown for Saint Anselm. Willoughby had 261 yards passing with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Anthony Brown caught five passes for 112 yards.

Up next, the Eagles host Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m. at Municipal Stadium on October 29.
