Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University football team kicked off its inaugural season at the Division II level against East Coast Prep in a 43-27 loss on Saturday evening.
There were a lot of firsts throughout the game, including the first touchdown, just 2:51 into the first quarter as Nick Wright caught a 12-yard TD pass from Broghean McGovern to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
After the Firebirds took a 7-6 lead, the Eagles marched right back down the field, capped by a 21 yard run from Roberto Salas to give Post the 12-7 lead with four minutes remaining in the quarter.
The Firebirds took the lead again on an Evan Falco TD pass from Billy Osborn to take a 14-12 lead, but the Eagles would take the lead into the half after Christian Collin caught a 15-yard pass from McGovern with 1:18 remaining to cap a six play, 62 yard drive.
East Coast Prep would score three more touchdowns to take a 36-19 lead, before McGovern had a three-yard TD run to cut the Eagles deficit to 36-27 with 3:57 left.
The Eagles failed on the ensuing onside kickoff before the Firebirds scored on the first play after on a 47 yard touchdown run by gunner White.
Salas finished the game with 20 carries for 133 yards and a touchdown. McGovern was 15-for-34 passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Christian Collin had five catches for 66 yards. James Reyes had two catches for 36 yards. Jaylen Rivera had an interception for the Eagles, which he returned 26 yards.
Up next, the Eagles take on Monroe College at 6 p.m. at Municipal Stadium on October 2nd.
