Waterbury, Conn. – Sergio Diaz scored two goals, including an 89
th minute game-winning strike off of a free kick to give the Post University men's soccer team a thrilling 4-3 win over Goldey-Beacom on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match.
It is the second straight win for the Eagles, who remain undefeated in conference play at 2-0 and 2-3-1 overall.
With the game looking destined for overtime, the Eagles were fouled, setting the stage for Diaz who struck the ball from 33 yards out in the top left corner out of the reach of Goldey-Beacom goalkeeper, Pedro Santolaya to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.
It was Diaz's second goal of the game, and third of the season.
The Eagles got on the board in the first minute as
William Nordqvist got on the board after
Carles Aliberch found him streaking down the middle of the field. Nordqvist got the ball on his right foot and struck it past his defender and Goldey-Beacom goalkeeper Pedro Santolaya to give the Eagles the 1-0.
Goldey-Beacom would tie the game in the 38
th minute from Patrick Short and would take the lead in the 48
th minute.
Diaz added his first goal of the game – and second of the season - on a pass from
Omar Florindo in the 57
th minute to tie the game at 2-2.
Alvaro Sanchez scored his third goal of the season as Diaz stole the ball from Goldey-Beacom and fed the ball between to defenders to Sanchez who put the ball home to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead in the 65th minute.
The Lightning tied the game in the 74
th minute to tie the game, 3-3, before the late game heroics by Diaz.
The Eagles outshot the Lightning, 25-7, including six shots apiece from Diaz and Florindo.
Soren Jensen had one save on the day for the Eagles.
Post returns to action on Saturday, October 2 to take on Jefferson on the road in a CACC match.
