Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University softball team made two late inning comebacks in a thrilling 4-3 and 9-8 doubleheader sweep of Bloomfield on Senior Day in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular season finale.
The Eagles finish their regular season with a 17-9 record.
Game one was a scoreless duel between Post's Bridget Betley and Bloomfield's Taylor Galyean for the first six innings before Bloomfield scored three in the top of the seventh.
The Eagles responded in the bottom of the inning, and they responded big.
Senior Skylar Devorin led off the inning with a walk followed by a single from classmate Cassidy Petrie. Both runners advanced a base on a fly out from Caitlin DeAngelis before a walk from Kasey Jusino loaded the bases.
With Bailee Zaccaro at the plate, relief pitcher, Danielle Walters threw a wild pitch, allowing Devorin to score to make it a 3-1 game. Zaccaro followed with an RBI groundout to make it a one-run game.
Down to their last out, Allyson Wallauer launched a ball to centerfield that took a bounce over the wall for a ground rule double that scored pinch runner Julia Maida to tie the game.
With the stage set for senior Demi Rivera, she ripped a single to left field to score Wallauer to give the Eagles the game one win.
Betley pitched a complete game for the Eagles, striking out five. She is now 7-4 on the season. Rivera and Petrie both finished game one with two hits.
Game two had no shortage of drama, either as the Eagles erased an 8-5 deficit in the bottom of the sixth and did all their scoring with two outs.
Similar to the rally in game one, the Eagles had runners on second and third with two outs before back-to-back walks from DeAngelis and Rivera scored Samantha Riccardulli, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, making it an 8-6 game.
Zaccaro – one of the heroes in game one – followed with a single to left to score Rivera and DeAngelis to tie the game.
With Lily Tomasiello at the plate, Bloomfield pitcher Danielle Walters threw a wild pitch. In an attempt to get pinch runner Carli Peruso at third, Bloomfield catcher Jordan Pollak overthrew third base, allowing Peruso to score and giving the Eagles the 9-8 lead.
Maddison Caldwell sat down the bottom half of the inning in order for her third win of the season.
The Eagles had gotten down 4-0 after the top of the third, but chipped away in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Petrie and an RBI double by DeAngelis.
Down 5-2 in the fourth, an RBI walk from Rianne Mayer, an RBI single from Riccardulli and a sacrifice fly from DeAngelis tied the game 5-5 at the time.
Petrie finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. DeAngelis was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Tomasiello was 2-for-4 with a run and Riccarudlli was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
During the games, 12 seniors – six from 2020 and six from 2021 – were honored. Emily Defini, Brittany Giordano, Rivera, Betley, Petrie and Devorin were honored from the 2021 team. Leyri Rivera, Briana Wilky, Brianna Koref, Brianna Rotunno, Shannon Camuso and Leigha Goldsack were honored.
Up next, the Eagles will play in the CACC tournament on May 5th, with their opponent to be determined.
