Bats Come Alive In Softball’s Sweep Of Goldey-Beacom

Wilmington, De.  – Caitlin DeAngelis hit two home runs on the day – including a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning of game two - and there was no shortage of offense or late game heroics as the Post University softball team swept Goldey-Beacom, 12-8 and 12-9 (8) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The climactic home run from DeAngelis came in the top of the eighth with the game knotted at 9-9. With one out in the inning, DeAngelis took a pitch from Gwen Safin over the left centerfield wall for her fifth home run of the season and give the Eagles a 10-9 lead.

Post wasn't done there, as Kasey Jusino followed with a double to centerfield and driven in by Bailee Zaccaro on an RBI single to make it an 11-9 game. After a single from Allyson Wallauer, Zaccaro would score on a wild pitch for the last bit of insurance for the Eagles.

After trailing 2-0 after the first inning, the Eagles used one of their biggest offensive innings in the top of the second to take a 6-2 lead.

Zaccaro and Wallauer hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 2-1 game before an RBI single from Demi Rivera scored Wallauer to tie it up. Four batters later after a fielder's choice and walk, Cassidy Petrie tripled to left to score Courtney Brobst and Samantha Riccardulli to give Post its first lead of the game, 4-2.

DeAngelis followed with a single to score Petrie to make it 5-2. The Eagles batted around and Zaccaro capped the inning with an RBI single to score DeAngelis to make it a 6-2 game.

Goldey-Beacom scored two in the bottom of the third and one in the fifth to make it a 6-5 game.

Post scored two more in the fifth on RBI singles from Brobst and Riccardulli and one in the sixth on an RBI single from Jusino to make it a 9-5 game.

The Lightning tied the game in the sixth on a two-run single by Taylor Beres and a two-run double by Safin to send the game into extra innings.

DeAngelis finished game two going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Petrie went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Jusino went 3-for-4 with a run and Zaccaro went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

The 18 hits by the Eagles were a season-high surpassing their previous high of 14 in game one.

Maddison Caldwell earned the win in two innings of scoreless relief, striking out two.

In game one, DeAngelis went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs, including an inside the park home run in the top of the first inning to give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.

The Lightning (4-9, 4-9 CACC) tied the game up with one run each in the bottom of the first and second before the Eagles took the lead back in the third on an RBI triple from Zaccaro and an error from Goldey-Beacom that scored Zaccaro to make it a 4-2 Post lead.

Goldey-Beacom responded with two in the bottom of the third and four in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-run single by Taylor Beres to give them the 8-4 lead.

The Eagles, who have made a habit of timely offense all season would respond again in the top of the fifth, plating five runs.

Post loaded the bases in the inning with a single from Petrie and DeAngelis and a walk from Jusino to load the bases for Zaccaro who singled to left to score two runs to make it an 8-6 game.

Wallauer singled to drive in Jusino, followed by a double play that scored Zaccaro to tie the game, 8-8.

Two straight singles by Brittany Giordano and Julia Cicala put runners on first and second, which led to a wild pitch that scored Jazmin Andrews to give Post the 9-8 lead.

Post added three more runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles by DeAngelis and Jusino and an RBI single from Wallauer.

Petrie finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs. Jusino was 1-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Zaccaro was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Wallauer was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The offensive output by the Eagles on the day moved Zaccaro into fifth place in the CACC in batting average at .444 and DeAngelis into third in slugging percentage at .768 and tied for fourth in home runs with five.

The Eagles now sit at 12-6 on the season and are in fifth place. They will host Felician in a CACC doubleheader on Sunday, April 25th beginning at 2:30 p.m.
