Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

McCall Seals Game With Bucket and Block As Men’s Basketball Takes Down Saint Anselm

Manchester, N.H. – Devonte McCall made the game winning layup with 20 seconds left and followed with the game-winning block at the buzzer as the Post University men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat Saint Anselm, 65-63 on Monday afternoon in a non-conference road game.

With the Eagles down 63-62 after a basket from Saint Anselm's Gustav Suhr-Jessen, McCall got the ball just outside of the paint, backed down his defender, spun to his right and laid the ball in to give the Eagles the 64-63 lead.

On the subsequent possession, Saint Anselm's Miles Tention missed a layup and Abdul-Basit Ajia and Suhr-Jessen got tied up on the rebound, giving the possession to the Eagles.
After a foul by Saint Anselm, D.J. Frechette hit one of two free throws.

Chris Paul of Saint Anselm grabbed the rebound off the missed free throw, raced down the court, went up for the layup and McCall blocked it against the backboard as the buzzer sounded to give the Eagles the win.

The Eagles rallied from an early 14-point deficit in the first half as they trailed 25-11 in the first half with 6:49 remaining.

Post finished the half on a 19-8 run, which included a three-pointer and a traditional three-point play from David Jasson and four points from Isaiah Holmes.

Jasson scored 12 of his team-high 21 points in the first half as the Hawks led 33-30 at the half.

Saint Anselm opened up the second half extending its lead back up to eight points at 40-32, but the Eagles scored the next nine, including four points from Holmes, a three from Frechette and a layup from Jasson to give the Eagles a very brief lead at 41-40 at the 14:16 mark of the half.

The game would stay between a one and two possession game throughout the second half as twice the Eagles would tie the game on clutch threes from Jasson and Jordan Williams. Frechette finished with eight points.

With the Hawks leading 59-58 at the 2:27 mark, the two teams would exchange one-point leads on four different occasions, the final time on McCall's game-winning shot.

Post outrebounded the Hawks, 42-36, including 14 from Ajia, who led everyone and tied a career-high.

The six blocked shots for the Eagles – including two from both McCall and Ajia – tied a season-high for the Eagles.

Holmes finished with 12 points on the day. Off the bench, Jordan Williams had seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Paul led the Hawks with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

It was the second straight time the Eagles have beaten the Hawks in their head-to-head series. The last time the two teams met, the Eagles won 88-75 against Saint Anselm who was ranked No. 20 in the nation at the time.

Up next, the Eagles will host Assumption in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. on December 30.
