Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Overtime Goal From Alvaro Sanchez Lifts Post Men’s Soccer To CACC Championship

Waterbury, Conn.  In a game you had to see to believe, the Post University men's soccer team won its third Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) title in four years defeating Dominican 3-2 in overtime on a 93rd minute goal from Alvaro Sanchez at Lamoy Field on Sunday.

The win gives the Eagles an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. It is also their tenth win in a row, a program record.

Dominican – seeded third - took charge early in the game scoring goals in the 31st and 41st minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

With about 20 minutes remaining in the game, the Eagles took control on the offensive end, exerting their will on the Dominican back line.

Eventually the pressure led to two penalty kicks, both by Sergio Diaz. The first came in the 76th minute, followed by a handball in the box in the 85th minute allowing Diaz to score his second goal.

In overtime, after the Chargers had an opportunity in the first minute, but the Eagles' back line thwarted the attempt in the box.

In the 93rd minute, Diaz made a pass from midfield to a streaking Sanchez who had a defender draped on him. The defender misplayed the ball, allowing a one on one with Dominican goalkeeper Lucas Silva Pereria who came out of the net to stop the shot, but Sanchez put the ball over the left shoulder of Silva Pereria to give the Eagles the title.

David Mollenthiel has now won ten straight games in net for the Eagles, stopping ten shots on the day.

Sanchez, for his three goals in the tournament, including the game winner, was named CACC Tournament MVP.

Sanchez, Diaz, Mollenthiel, Sergio Sanchez, Andrea Baleotto and Omar Florindo were all named to the CACC All-Tournament team.

This is the fourth title overall for the Eagles, who were also the regular season champions this season. They won the title in 2008, 2018 and 2019 to go along with this season's title, all under the guidance of head coach Ted Haley.

On Monday, the Eagles will learn who they will play in the NCAA Tournament during the selection show at 6:30 p.m., which can be seen on NCAA.com.
