Bridgeport, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team lost a tough 86-82 season opener to Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon.
Five players scored in double figures, with David Jasson leading the way with 20 points. Devonte McCall had a monster game with 14 points and 18 rebounds for a double-double.
The Eagles led 71 67 with 12 seconds remaining after two Isaiah Holmes free throws. A three from SCSU's Lyron Bennett made it a 71-70 game. After Tyler Small sank a free throw to put the Eagles back up by two with four seconds left, the Owls' Isaiah Boissard made a layup at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
The Eagles took an early 73-72 lead in overtime, and after falling behind 78-73 a three-pointer and layup from McCall on back-to-back possessions tied the game backup before the Owls answered with a three from Ulyen Coleman. The Owls would never relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
Post led by as much as 20 in the game and had a 38-24 lead going into the half as Jasson scored 12 of his points in the half, hitting two threes. D.J. Frechette also scored eight of his points in the half. The Eagles shot 6-for-11 in the first half from three.
Holmes finished the game with 15 points, while Frechette had 13 and Abdul-Basit Ajia had ten.
Post outrebounded the Owls, 50-46, McCall leading the way in that department.
Lyron Bennett led all Owls with 22 points.
The Eagles will play at Bridgeport at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
