Shelton, Conn. – A goal from
Jenna Abeyta with 34 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Post University women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over Saint Michael's for their first win of the season in a New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) game on Friday evening at The Rinks at Shelton.
Abeyta stole the puck in the offensive end, went to her right and while falling to the ground put the puck past Saint Michael's goaltender, Carissa Mudrak to give the Eagles the win.
It was Abeyta's – the team's leading scorer from the 2019-2020 season – first goal of the season.
The game went into overtime thanks to terrific goaltending by
Kristin Smith, who stopped 25 shots on the night in her first start of the season.
Mudrak had 20 saves of her own in net for Saint Michael's.
The Eagles won 29 of the 23 faceoffs, with
Julia Wysocki winning 11 and
Jade Giesbrecht winning ten.
The Eagles are now 1-1 on the season. The Purple Knights fall to 0-2.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday at The Rinks of Shelton at 2:15 in a NEWHA match.
