Shelton, Conn. – The Post University men's hockey team led late in the third period, but lost a tough Northeast10 game to Franklin Pierce, 5-4 in overtime on Saturday evening at The Rinks at Shelton.
It was the Cerebral Palsy Benefit Game for the Eagles as Team IMPACT All-Star Owen Gallino took the ceremonial faceoff to begin the game. The team raised donations for Hidden Acres is a rehabilitation center in Naugatuck where children and adults explore their potential and strive to meet their personal goals through human and animal bonding.
Senior Tyler Hackett got the scoring going for the Eagles in the first period at the 7:15 mark taking a rebound off a shot from junior Evan Lugo and stuffed it into the net past Franklin Pierce goalkeeper, Ian Wallace to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.
After the Ravens scored in the second to tie the game at the 6:30 mark, the Eagles scored just 26 seconds to retake the lead as senior Matt Moreschi ripped a wrist shot from the slot for his first goal of the season on a breakaway on a pass from senior Lucas Smith to give Post the 2-1 lead.
The Eagles (4-17-2, 1-14-1 NE10) took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play at the 14:38 mark as junior Jake Raleigh found himself in the right spot on a rebound off a shot from Lugo and caught Wallace out of position to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. It was Raleigh's ninth goal of the season, putting him second on the team.
Kieran Gardner added his second goal of the season at the 18:36 mark of the second period to give Post a 4-1 lead as he stole the puck at center ice and skated in for a breakaway goal on a 4-on-4.
The Ravens (13-9-4, 6-5-3 NE10) mounted a comeback in the third, scoring a shorthanded goal at the 2:37 mark in the third, and added two more in the final 89 seconds including one at 19:02 from Chris Stevenson to send the game into overtime at 4-4.
At 3:07 into overtime, James Morrisey took a pass from Alex Lester and scored the game-winner.
The Eagles will play at Anna Maria on Feb. 11 at 5:40 p.m. in a non-conference game.
