Waterbury, Conn. – The top teams in each division played a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) classic, but the Post University lost a 58-57 game in overtime to No. 10 Jefferson on a last second shot on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams went into overtime, tied 51-51 before sophomore
Devonte McCall made a layup to give Post the 53-51 lead. Jefferson responded with a three from Josh Bradanese, but the Eagles responded with a layup from
Marcus Johnson to put the Eagles (16-7, 10-4 CACC) up, 55-54.
Jefferson regained the lead at 56-55 at the 2:48 mark. After a scoreless stretch of 92 seconds, the Eagles took a lead at the 1:06 mark on a jumper in the lane from sophomore
Isaiah Holmes to give Post a 57-56 lead.
However, the Rams (20-2, 13-0 CACC) took possession with 16 seconds left, dribbled down the clock and Kylan Guerra drove and hit a tough layup after strong defense from the Eagles with 0.7 on the clock to give the Rams the win.
Post trailed 28-22 heading into the half and fell behind 38-28 at the 13:29 mark after a layup from Bradanese.
The Eagles rallied with an 11-2 run behind five points from McCall, including a three after an offensive rebound from senior
Savion Boissard. A layup from Johnson cut the Eagles' deficit to 40-39. Four straight points from the Rams gave them a five-point cushion at the 8:33 mark, and the two teams battled in a one or two possession game for nearly eight minutes before a jumper from Johnson tied the game for the Eagles for the first time at 51-51 with 47 seconds left.
Post had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but a last second jumper banked off the backboard and rimmed out, sending the game into overtime.
McCall finished with 21 points (10-for-16), 11 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Eagles. Johnson finished with eight points and eight rebounds and junior
Darrick Boyd scored eight.
The Eagles had 15 second-chance points to just 11 for Jefferson. Post also outscored the Rams in the paint, 34-26.
Deondre Bourne had 24 points to lead the Rams. Guerra had seven points, six assists and five rebounds.
The Eagles will play at Dominican on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. for the top spot in the North Division.
