Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team won its fourth straight game and held off a second half rally from Caldwell in an 81-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win Tuesday evening.
The win puts the Eagles back in sole possession of first place in the North Division at 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the CACC.
Post blitzed the Cougars in the beginning of the first half, going on a 12-3 run to start the game as Savion Boissard scored five points early on. It'd be a sign of things to come in the half.
After the Cougars cut the game to 12-8, the Eagles scored the next 18 points to take a 30-8 lead as sophomores D.J. Frechette and Isaiah Holmes along with junior Jonathan Duvivier all hit threes to give the Eagles the 30-8 lead at the 8:08 mark. Frechette hit another three at the 6:42 mark to give the Eagles its largest lead of the half at 35-12. Post went into halftime holding a 46-29 lead. Frechette scored 14 in the half on 3-for-5 shooting from three to lead the Eagles.
Caldwell regrouped and jumped out to a 17-8 run to cut Post's lead to 54-46 after a three from A.J. Kittles. Junior Lamarr Wood would put the Eagles back up by 12 at 58-46 at the 12:07 mark. Caldwell's Vaughn Covington then led the Cougars back, scoring seven points as part of a 9-2 run for the Cougars to make it a 60-55 game. The Cougars would then cut it to 61-57 on a layup from Anthony Cooper. It'd be the closest Caldwell would get the rest of the way.
The Eagles extended its lead back up to 69-60 on a three from Duvivier at the 5:28 mark. Post would close out the game on a 12-6 run. Sophomore Abdul-Basit Ajia scored ten of his 14 points in the second half.
Frechette finished with 15 points. Holmes had 13 points and Ajia added 11 rebounds to his 14 points. Wood went 3-for-3 from the field for eight points.
The Eagles took advantage of Caldwell's miscues, scoring 31 points off of 20 Cougars turnovers. Led by Frechette, the Eagles bench scored 47 points to only 11 for Caldwell.
Covington finished with 17 points for Caldwell.
It will be a showdown of the top teams in each division on Saturday as Post will host Jefferson at 3 p.m. at the Drubner Center. Jefferson is currently 19-2 overall and 12-0 in the CACC, leading the South Division.
