Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team clinched a first-round home game in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament after a wild 68-62 win over Felician on
Tuesday evening in a loud Drubner Center.
Four Eagles (18-8, 12-5 CACC) scored in double figures, led by sophomore
Devonte McCall and senior
Marcus Johnson, who had 13 points.
After holding a 32-26 lead into halftime, the Eagles opened up with a three from junior
Darrick Boyd to take a 35-26 lead out of the gate. Felician responded with a 20-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 46-39 lead at the 13:37 mark of the second quarter. The Eagles scored the next eight points, five from sophomore
D.J. Frechette and capped by a three from classmate
Keandre Fair to give Post a 47-46 lead at the 11:23 mark.
The two teams would swap leads two more times over the next three minutes, and the Eagles would take a five-point lead at 55-50 after a four-point play from junior
Jonathan Duvivier gave post the 55-50 lead. A 12-4 run from Felician put them back up 62-59 before Boyd hit two free throws on the next possession to close the gap.
The turning point in the game would follow as Felician's Rachid Shimou missed a layup, leading to an Eagles rebound and subsequent free throw from McCall to tie the game. McCall, Boyd and Johnson would hit their next six free throws to close out the game as the Eagles finished with a 9-0 run over the last 2:22.
The Golden Falcons led by as much as nine points (20-11) in the first half, until the Eagles went on a 19-2 over a 6:12 span to take a 30-22 lead after a layup from sophomore
Isaiah Holmes at the 5:07 mark. Holmes, Frechette and Boyd each hit a three during the run as the Eagles took the 32-26 lead into the break.
Boyd finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Frechette finished with ten points. McCall added five blocks and ten rebounds for his double-double, while Johnson grabbed nine boards.
Jeff Lewis led all Felician players with 21 points.
The Eagles will take on Nyack in a CACC North game on February 22 at 3 p.m.
