Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team held off a late rally from Nyack and sophomore D.J. Frechette led the way with 20 points as the Post University men's basketball team defeated Nyack, 77-66 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Wednesday evening for its fifth consecutive win.
The Eagles now sit at 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the CACC.
Post held a slim 28-25 lead heading into the second half before outscoring the Warriors 31-16 over the first ten minutes of the game to take a 59-41 lead. Senior Savion Boissard scored 12 points during the run and the Eagles hit five threes during the run from four different players. Senior D.J. Jarrett hit two threes, and Frechette, Boissard and junior Darrick Boyd hit one.
Post extended its lead to as much as 22 points at 65-43 at the 7:45 mark after two free-throws from Boyd.
However, the Warriors would rally and cut the deficit to 69-63 with 1:32 left and an opportunity to cut into the lead more after the Eagles turned the ball over after a timeout. But, sophomore Abdul-Basit Ajia blocked a dunk attempt from Jayden Dawson. Boyd was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit two free-throws.
On the next Nyack possession, Boissard stole the ball and sophomore Isaiah Holmes fed Frechette who made a circus layup to put the game away for the Eagles as they led 73-63 with 43 seconds left. Frechette would hit four more free-throws to close out the game for Post.
Both teams were cold from the field in the first half as Nyack and Post both shot under 30 percent from the field. Nyack led for the majority of the half until Boissard hit a jumper to make it a 19-18 game at the 5:15 mark. The Warriors would take the lead back at 23-21, but a layup and free throw from Ajia gave the Eagles a 26-23 lead, one they would hold the rest of the way before going up 28-25 at halftime.
Boissard finished with 16 points and four rebounds. Johnson and Boyd each had nine points and Ajia had seven points and nine rebounds. Post made the most of its time at the free-throw line, hitting 17 of 21 attempts (81 percent). The Eagles scored 13 points off of 14 offensive rebounds.
Joel Bailey led all Nyack (6-7, 1-4 CACC) scorers with 22 points.
