Wild Second Half Rally Gives Men's Basketball Sixth Straight Win

Waterbury, Conn. – In a wild second half rally, the Post University men's basketball team won its sixth straight game, a 75-73 victory over Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center.

Post now sits at 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the CACC, tied for first in the North Division.

The six-game winning streak is the second longest in program history behind an eight game winning streak the Eagles had in the 2012-2013 season.

After trailing 38-31 into the half, the Eagles allowed the first four points to the Lightning to face their biggest deficit of the game at 42-31 at the 18:50 mark of the second half.

From there, the Eagles went off on a 24-13 run to take their first lead of the second half after a layup from sophomore D.J. Frechette gave the Eagles the 55-53 lead. With the score 59-57 in favor of the Eagles, they would go on a 10-4 run to gain their biggest edge of the second half at 69-61 as senior D.J. Jarrett, and junior Devonte McCall contributed with three-pointers. Sophomore Isaiah Holmes capped the run with a jumper.

The Lightning stormed back and cut the Post lead to 69-67, but at a key moment in the game, junior Darrick Boyd stole the ball from Jesiah West and fed senior Marcus Johnson on the fast break to put the Eagles back up, 71-67. A dunk by West made it a two-point game again, before senior Savion Boissard snatched an offensive rebound off a Post miss to put the Eagles back up again by four at 73-69.

Frechette would hit two free-throws to give the Eagles a 75-70 lead, but Yasin Pretlow of Goldey-Beacom answered with a three-pointer with three seconds left to make it a 75-73 game. The Eagles were fouled and missed the front end of a one and one, giving the Lightning a chance at the buzzer, but a three-point attempt from Nazim Derry fell short, to the collective exhale of the Drubner Center.

Post opened up the game with a 9-0 lead behind a three from Boyd and four points from Boissard. The Lightning answered with seven straight points and eventually took its first lead at the 8:52 mark at 14-13 after a three from Marcellus Livingston. The Lightning extended its lead to as much as nine points at two different instances. A jumper at the buzzer from Boyd cut the Eagles deficit to 38-31

Five players scored in double-figures for the Eagles, led by Boyd who scored 17 to go along with four assists. Senior Marcus Johnson had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. McCall had 12 points to go with seven rebounds and both Jarrett and Frechette, each had 11 points off the bench.

Livingston led four Goldey-Beacom (7-8, 4-2 CACC) players in scoring with 22 points.

Up next, the Eagles play on the road at Felician on January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
