Johnson’s Double-Double Leads Men’s Basketball Past New York Tech

Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team rang in 2020 the same way it ended 2019 - with a win - defeating New York Tech, 82-71 on Thursday evening at the Drubner Center in a non-conference game.

It was the third straight win for the Eagles as senior Marcus Johnson led the way for the Eagles with 20 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

Post now sits at 8-4 overall and is 2-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference

Post used a big 25-7 run during the second half to help pull away after a tightly contested first half.

With the game tied at 39-39 with 16:29 remaining in the second half, the Eagles rattled off eight straight points, behind back-to-back three-pointers from senior D.J. Jarrett to give Post the 47-39 lead, and forcing the Bears to call a timeout.

The Eagles would hit three more threes during the run, as sophomores Isaiah Holmes, D.J. Frechette and Abdul-Basit Ajia each hit a three to give Post its biggest lead of the game at 64-46 with 11:26 remaining in the game. Ajia scored five points in the run for the Eagles.

New York Tech struggled to get close as the Eagles would keep the lead in double-digits for the majority of the half. The Bears were able to cut the Post lead to 78-71 with 57 seconds left, but Frechette went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to seal the game.

Johnson carried the load in the first half for the Eagles, scoring 13 of his 20 points in the half on 5-for-9 shooting and 2-for-4 shooting from three. He scored the last seven points of the first half, including a layup with one second remaining off an offensive rebound and assist from sophomore Devonte McCall to give the Eagles the 32-30 lead at the break.

Junior Darrick Boyd finished with 14 points. Jarrett finished with 11 points and McCall had eight points to go along with ten rebounds. Frechette scored nine, while Ajia had five points and eight rebounds.

The Eagles bench scored 25 points to just nine for the Bears. The Eagles also forced New York Tech (1-13, 0-3 ECC) into 25 turnovers leading to 30 points.

Marcus Saint-Furcy led all Bears with 24 points.

Up next, the Eagles get back into conference play as they play Holy Family on the road in a CACC match on Saturday at 3 p.m.
