Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Diaz Scores, But Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener To No. 5 Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. -  Reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year Sergio Diaz scored just four minutes into the season, but the Post University men's soccer team dropped its season opener to No. 5 Adelphi, 2-1 in a non-conference game Thursday evening.

Diaz - a first team All-American a season ago - scored on a pass from freshman Felix Hjertqvist. Hjerqvist sent a 25 yard pass from the right flank to the left side to Diaz who put it past Adelphi goalkeeper Matt Apicella to give Post the 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

The Eagles held that lead until the 31st minute when Adelphi's Alessandro Corti took a shot from the top of the box to past Post goalkeeper David Mollenthial to tie the game, 1-1.

The next 21 minutes stayed scoreless until the 52nd minute, as Filippo Peri scored on a cross into the box from Polo Marciano to give Adelphi the 2-1 lead.

The defending CACC champions had a shot to tie it late in the 85th minute, but a header from Antoine Trifinov was stopped by Apicella.

Both Mollenthial and Apicella finished with three saves apiece.

Up next, the Eagles take on Southern New Hampshire in a non-conference road game on September 11 at 7 p.m.
