The Post University women's volleyball team competed in the 3rd Annual Post Eagles Invitational over the weekend of September 14 and 15.
Here is a breakdown of the matches:
Sunday
Southern Connecticut State University 3, Post 1 (20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25)
The best performance of the weekend for the young Eagles team came in its final match of the weekend in its loss to Southern Connecticut State University. Set one saw the Eagles take a 20-18 lead before the Owls went on a 7-0 run to take the set. Senior Michelle Stublarec had four of her team-high 13 kills in the set.
Post never trailed in its set two win, jumping out to an 11-4 lead on two more kills from Stublarec and forcing the Owls into five attack errors. The Owls would go on a 11-4 run of their own to tie the match at 15-15, but two kills from Stublarec and one from Mikayla McLeod gave the Eagles three of the next four points and take a lead they wouldn't relinquish the set.
In the third set, the Eagles led by as much as five points at 14-9, but a 16-8 run by the Owls closed out the set. At one point in the set, McLeod went on a tear, with four kills in a seven-point stretch, which gave the Eagles a 12-8 lead at the time.
Again, the Eagles made the Owls sweat in the fourth, as the teams swapped leads four times before a kill from Abigail Epstein of SCSU ended the match. Caitlyn Cornish had two kills in the set, including one to give the Eagles its final lead of the set at 16-15. Senior Shannon Veale also had two kills in the set.
Suzy Boulay was stellar on defense, keeping rallies alive with her 26 digs. She also finished with seven assists and one kill. McLeod finished with nine kills and 12 digs. Aniya Goodman had six kills. Cornish had two solo blocks and two block assists to go with her four kills.
Bloomsburg 3, Post 1 (25-21, 15-25, 15-25, 15-25)
The Eagles' Sunday morning match against Bloomsburg saw the Eagles take the first set without ever trailing. Post jumped out to a 13-5 lead with five kills from four different players as Goodman, Jayda Roman, Keyah Sinclair and McLeod. The Huskies made a run to cut the lead to 20-17, but two aces from Cassidee Knox and Goodman helped put the game away to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the set.
Goodman finished the game with 11 kills, while Roman had six. Kim Buttery led the match with 26 assists to go along with her 11 digs. Boulay had 17 digs as libero, a team-high.
Saturday
Bridgeport 3, Post 1 (11-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-9)
In match one, the Eagles took the undefeated Purple Knights to four sets, winning set two, 25-22. The Eagles had 12 kills in the set, including four by Veale who, along with classmate Ann Marie Nelson, led with eight total kills in the match. McLeod and Stublarec each had six kills apiece. Kim Buttery finished with 23 assists to lead the Eagles, while Boulay had 13 digs.
Saint Anselm 3, Post 0 (12-25, 23-25, 11-25)
In the night cap against Saint Anselm on Saturday, McLeod led the Eagles with eight kills, while Stublarec chipped in with seven. Buttery finished with 17 assists and Boulay's defense led to a match-high 14 digs to lead all players.
In the second set, the Eagles jumped out to a 15-5 lead as the Eagles used the serve to its advantage. Madison Conroy had two aces while Jayda Roman pitched in with one during the opening run. McLeod made her presence known early during the same run, with four kills during the run. The Eagles held a 23-17 lead in the set before the Hawks scored the final eight points to take the set.
