Missiti’s Record Breaking Home Run, Goehrig’s Complete Game Shutout Highlight Eagles Sweep Of Wilmington

WATERBURY, Conn. - Post took the field on Saturday for a doubleheader against one of the CACC's top teams, the Wilmington Wildcats.

Freshmen Chris Torres got the call in game one for the Eagles. Wilmington got to him in the second inning. With the ball carrying well all day, Wilmington capitalized with second inning two-run home run to open up the scoring. They would go on to score another run in the third inning to go up 3-0.

Isasis Guzman led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to centerfield to get the Eagles on the board.

After a Christian Aliberti single and Tyler Melko walk, Rosario Missiti stepped up to the plate and did what he does best, send one over the fence. This time, he hit a no doubt three-run bomb over the right field wall to put Post up 4-3. Missiti's tenth home run of the season also broke the single season home run record for Post University Baseball (previously held by Don Walsh: 2016, 2017)

Wilmington wasted no time tying the game up with a two out RBI single in the top of the fourth.

The Eagles' top of the order struck again in the bottom of the fifth. Travious Ford led off with a booming triple to left field, followed by an Aliberti RBI double. This put the Eagles back on top, 5-4.

Once again, Wilmington bounced back next inning to tie the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to gain a 7-5 lead over the Eagles.

Post loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Shortstop Danny Di Marzo delivered a RBI single with the bases juiced to cut the Wildcats lead down to one.

Wilmington tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth with a RBI single followed by a RBI double. The score was 9-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Ford led off the eighth with his third home run of the season. His home run left him only a double shy of hitting for the cycle.

Following the led off homer, Post loaded the bases and scored a run on an error, cutting the Wildcats lead back down to one.

After a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, the Eagles came back up to the plate poised to complete the comeback.

Coming off an extend absence from the lineup due to injury, John Cartagena delivered a pinch-hit led off single to help spark the comeback.

Travious Ford Scores Game Winning Run

Travious Ford followed with his fourth base knock of the day, a single advancing the tying run to second base.

Two batters later Tyler Melko and his .400 average stepped to the plate with a chance to win the game, and he did just that. After seeing a few tough pitches, Melko handled a pitch over the plate and smacked a looping line drive over the third basemen's head and deep into the left field corner. Cartagena scored easily from second and Ford motored around from first and crossed the plate standing up to win the game in dramatic walk-off fashion, 10-9.

Game two played much differently than the first game. Matt Goehrig and the Eagles dominated from the first inning.

Starting pitcher Matt Goehrig retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, with the one non-retired batter being a walk.

The Eagles gave Goehrig a one run lead in the bottom of the third when Nick Gastin walked with the bases loaded, scoring Tyler Melko who singled earlier in the inning

Goehrig surrendered a hit for the first time in the fifth inning when Wilmington led off with an infield single. Goehrig retired the Wildcats in order following the leadoff hit.

Rosario Missiti started the bottom of the fifth with and single. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Mike Lisinicchia drove in Missiti with a sharp RBI single.

Post would tack on another fifth inning runner later in the frame when John Cartagena doubled in Nick Gastin.

Three runs would be more than enough for Goehrig. Goehrig retired Wilmington in order for the fourth time in the sixth inning. His record improved to 3-0 on the year.

Things got interesting in the top of the seventh when Wilmington brought the game-tying run to the plate with two outs.

However, Goehrig induced a popup to the first basemen to earn a complete game, two hit shut out including seven strikeouts.

Travious Ford collected two hits in the second game of the doubleheader, making him 6 for 9 on the day with three runs scored and one RBI out of the leadoff spot.

Next Up - Post will travel to Caldwell on Monday, April 8th for a doubleheader starting a noon.
