Game Recap: Softball |

Andrews Has Clutch Hit As Softball Splits With Goldey-Beacom

Wilmington, De. - Freshman Jazmin Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) had a clutch RBI single in the top of the sixth inning and the Eagles pitching staff combined to strikeout five batters as the Post University softball team topped Goldey-Beacom in the second game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, 3-2. The Lightning won game one, 2-1.

With the Eagles down 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning in game two, sophomore Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) walked to lead off the inning. After an out, junior Brianna Rotunno (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice before freshman Sydney Jones (Camden, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for freshman Rianne Mayer (Berlin, Conn.) who was patient at the plate and drew a walk to make it a 2-2 game. It set the stage for Andrews, who took a pitch from Jess Lusk, and put it into centerfield to scored Rotunno for the lead, and subsequent game-winning run.

Lusk homered in the bottom of the fourth for Goldey-Beacom to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead. The Eagles answered in the following half inning on an RBI single from sophomore Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) that scored Mayer to make it a 2-1 game.

Sophomore Bridget Betley (Fairfield, N.J.) started for the Eagles and struck out three in four innings, giving up two runs. Freshman Christina Loeffler (East Meadow, N.Y.) got the win in relief, pitching three innings and striking out two.

In game one, junior Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) had an RBI single in the top of the sixth, but the rally fell short as the Eagles left a runner on third as the last two batters grounded and popped out.

Rachel Davis hit a two-run double for the Lightning, giving them a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Senior Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) got the tough luck loss for the Eagles, as she gave up two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one in five innings.

Up next, the Eagles (9-13, 3-6 CACC) take on Wilmington in a CACC doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
