Waterbury, Conn. - Sophomore
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) homered to jump start game two as the Post University softball team clinched a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament with a doubleheader split against Jefferson. Eagles won game two, 6-4 after dropping game one, 4-2 in eight innings.
Rivera's home run, a two-run shot scored freshmanÂ
Jazmin Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) with two outs in the top of the first inning of game two, a lead they would never relinquish. It was Rivera's fourth homer of the season.
The Eagles scored three more in the fourth inning, scoring one run on a bases loaded wild pitch that plated freshman
Bailee Zaccaro (Levvitown, Pa.) while junior
Skylar Devorin (Bethany Beach, De.) was at the plate. Devorin then made the Rams pay even more with a two-run single that scored freshmen
Briana Wilky (Swedesboro, N.J.) and
Allyson Wallauer (Landenberg, Pa.) to put Post up, 5-0.
Jefferson scored two in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the Eagles lead, highlighted by an RBI double from Winnai Hoyt, but the Eagles answered back the next half-inning with an RBI single from Wilky, putting Post up, 6-2.
The Rams rallied with two runs in the seventh but stranded a runner on third.
Sophomore
Bridget Betley (Fairfield, N.J.) earned the win for the Eagles, pitching a complete game and striking out two while giving up just one earned run.
In game one, the Rams walked-off with a 4-2 win on a two-run homer by Hoyt.
After Jefferson scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead, the Eagles responded immediate as Wallauer hit a two-run double to score Zaccaro and
Demi Rivera to put Post up, 2-1. The Rams tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout.
In the bottom of the eighth, Erin Maher hit a lead off double to begin the inning. After a groundout moved her to third, Hoyt hit a homer to left field to give the Rams the win.
With wins Sunday against Holy Family (2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at LaMoy Field) and some help from other games around the CACC, the Eagles could clinch as high as the fifth seed in the CACC tournament which begins on May 2nd.Â
The Eagles are currently in sixth place with a 20-19 overall record and a 12-12 CACC record.
