Goehrig and Missiti Homer, But Eagles Baseball Drops Two To Jefferson

Philadelphia, Pa. - Senior Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) both homered during a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Jefferson, but the Post University baseball team dropped both games, 16-4 and 9-6 to the Rams.

With the loss, the Eagles now sit at 20-22 overall and 17-14 in the CACC. They have at least clinched the No. 2 seed in the North Division.

In game two, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out two-run double by Goehrig, that scored junior Tyler Melko (Knoxville, Penn.), who doubled and Missiti who was hit by a pitch.

Jefferson answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a solo home run by Richard Joa to lead off the inning.

An RBI single by both senior John Cartagena Jr. (Danbury, Conn.) in the top of the second one by freshman Nicholas Gastin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) in the third put the Eagles up 4-3. This time, the Rams answered with three runs in the bottom of the third on three separate RBI singles. They would tack on one more in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch.

Post rallied in the fifth as Missiti, again, was hit by a pitch with one out, setting the stage for Goehrig who blasted his seventh homer of the season to left-center to cut the deficit to 7-6 in the top of the fifth.

The Rams added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Austin Torres hit a two-run homer to put them up 9-6.

Post attempted a rally in the top of the seventh as Missiti singled with an out and Gastin walked with two outs to put runners on first and second, but the Eagles were unable to convert.

Goehrig finished the game going 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Gastin was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Missiti reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with two runs.

Junior Chas Cywin (Bethel, Conn.) started on the mound and struck out four in three innings, giving up four earned runs - six total - on nine hits.

In game one, the Rams scored 11 runs over  innings six through eight en route to the win.

Post took a 2-1 lead in the fourth after falling behind in the bottom of the third as Missiti hit a solo homer - his CACC-leading 11th - to tie the game at 1-1. Gastin who doubled with one out would later score on a wild pitch, putting the Eagles up by a run.

Jefferson answered with a four-run bottom of the fourth as Efrain Santiago hit a two-run homer to give the Rams the lead for good.

Post would get it as close as 5-4, scoring two runs on the top of the sixth as an error off the bat of junior Jared Zima (Berlin, Conn.) scored sophomore Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) and junior Evan Schaffner (Boynton Beach, Fla.).

However, Jefferson added two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and six more in the eighth to put the game away. Torres hit a three-run homer in the eighth for Jefferson.

Up next, the Eagles play Dominican at noon on the road in their final CACC game of the season on April 29, which could have seeding implications as Dominican currently is in first in the North Division. It is a makeup game of a rained out April 22nd matchup.
