Softball Holds Off Rallies By Owls In Doubleheader Sweep

New Haven, Conn. - In both games, the Post University softball team withstood late rallies by Southern Connecticut State University but held on to sweep the Owls, 4-2 and 10-9 in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

Game two had plenty of action, capped by an eventual game-winning RBI single from freshman Bailee Zaccaro (Levittown, Pa.) to put the Eagles up 10-9 in the top of the seventh inning.

The Eagles led 9-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth before the Owls rallied for six runs to tie the game up.

Post jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as freshman Kasey Jusino (Bordentown, N.J.) and sophomore Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) hit back-to-back RBI doubles to put the Eagles up 2-0. An RBI single from Zaccaro put the Eagles up 3-0. A defensive mishap and a bases loaded walk put the Eagles up 5-0.

SCSU answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles got a run back as freshman Jazmin Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to score classmate Sydney Jones (Camden, N.Y.) to put Post  up 6-3.

The Eagles added three more runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by another big hit from Jusino to put Post up 9-3. This time a two-run double to score freshman Briana Wilky (Swedesboro, N.J.) and Andrews. Wilky reached on an RBI single earlier in the inning.

Those runs proved important as the Owls rattled off six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jayden Delaporta hit a big bases clearing triple to make it a 9-8 before an error by the Eagles tied the game at 9-9.

In the top of the seventh after a one out single from Wilkiy and a walk from Jusino, Zaccaro singled to left to score Wilky to give the Eagles the game-winning run.

Jusino finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Zaccaro was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Andrews and Wilky eached scored two runs.

In game one, freshman Samantha McErlane (Mount Ephraim, N.J.) struck out six in six innings as the Eagles held on late for the 4-2 win.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Eagles erupted for all four of their runs in the fourth as junior Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) hit an RBI single to score sophomore Brittany Giordano (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Three batters later, Demi Rivera drew a bases loaded walk before a big two-run single by junior Brianna Rotunno (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave Post a much needed cushion at 4-0.

McErlane cruised along for six innings before the Owls first four batters reached base as two runs scored before senior Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) got out of the jam, forcing Sara Buscetto to ground into a double play followed by a lineout to end the game.

Up next, the Eagles (14-15) play Chestnut Hill in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road doubleheader on April 13 beginning at noon.
