Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) hit a clutch two-run homer as the Post University baseball team topped Southern Connecticut State University, 8-7 in a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles move above .500 at 16-15 on the season, as they have won five of their last seven games.
Post never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout from Melko that scored junior
Travious Ford (Greenville, N.C.), followed by an RBI single from senior
Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) that scored freshman
Christian Aliberti (Eastchester, N.Y.). Aliberti singled earlier in the inning.
After starting pitcher, senior
Brett Pisanieschi (East Quogue, N.Y.) retired the first three Owls in order in the first, the Eagles bats got going again, scoring two more runs on back-to-back RBI doubles from Melko and Aliberti to make it a 4-0 game.Â
The Owls tacked on a run in the second and two in the third to make it a 4-3 game.
In the top of the fifth, senior
Bryan Rossetti (Seymour, Conn.) lead off with a single before Goehrig blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left center wall to put the Eagles up 6-3. Junior
Evan Schaffner (Boynton Beach, Fla.) would help add another run in the inning as his sacrifice fly scored senior
John Cartagena, Jr. (Danbury, Conn.) to make it a 7-3 Eagles lead.
Melko provided the Eagles with another much needed insurance run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly of his own that scored Ford.
The sac fly proved large for the Eagles as the Owls scored two runs in both the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings and left the potential tying run on third base as sophomore
Travvis Ferguson (Nassau, Bahamas(, who came in to pitch, got SCSU's Mike DeMartino to line out to left to seal the game.
Aliberti finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk. He reached safely in all four of his plate appearances. Ford finished 1-for-4 with two runs and a walk.Â
Pisaneschi earned the win and is 2-0 on the season. Junior
Tyler Boisvert (Waterbury, Conn.) pitched three innings of scoreless relief and struck out four.
Nick Lamberti was 2-for-5 with two RBI for SCSU.
