Goehrig Strikes Out Seven As Eagles Split With Nyack

Nyack, N.Y. - Three players drove in two runs apiece in game two as the Post University baseball team split a doubleheader against Nyack in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. Eagles won game two 9-1 after dropping game one, 15-5.

After a scoreless first inning, junior Evan Schaffner (Boynton Beach, Fla.) drove in his two runs of the game on an RBI single that scored sophomore Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) and freshman Isaias Guzman (Passaic, N.J.) to give Post a 2-0 lead. Classmate Christian Alberti (Eastchester, N.Y.) then followed with his own two-run single to put Post up 4-0. Schaffner and freshman Evan Sinclair (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored on the play.

Post tacked one on in the third on a sacrifice fly by Di Marzo.

In the fourth, the Eagles opened up the floodgates and put the game away. Sinclair opened the inning with a single. After a walk and a passed ball put runners on second and third, another passed ball scored Sinclair. After an out and a walk from junior Tyler Melko (Knoxville, Penn.), senior Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) ripped an RBI single to drive in Schaffner. After a walk to starting pitcher Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.), Guzman drove in two with an RBI double to give the Eagles a 9-0 lead and never looked back.

On the mound, Goehrig pitched a complete five inning game, striking out seven.

In game one, the Eagles took an early 3-0 lead after scoring two runs in the first in one in the second before the Warriors scored 15 of the final 17 runs of the game.

Post scored two in the first on an RBi double by Alberti that scored Schaffner. Melko then followed up with an RBI single to score Alberti to make it a 2-0 game. Post tacked one more on in the top of the second after Schaffner reached on an error that scored Di Marzo.

Nyack answered with two in the second to make it a 3-2 game before Melko hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot to right to make it a 4-2 game.

It'd be the last bit of scoring the Eagles would do as Nyack scored two in the third to tie the game, capped by a sacrifice fly by Yoni Rodriguez that made it a 4-4 game.

Nyack tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth followed by four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to put the game away.

Melko tacked on an RBI double in the ninth for the Eagles.

Melko went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Alberti went 1-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

Austin Fischer went 1-for-4 with two runs and three RBI for Nyack. Gabriel Vasquez went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.

Up next, the Eagles (3-9, 0-2) take on USciences in a CACC home doubleheader on March 24 at Municipal Stadium.
