Shelton, Conn. – Senior Molly Brumfield had a goal and assist, but the Post University women's hockey team lost 8-2 to Sacred Heart in a New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) match on Friday evening.
After Sacred Heart scored at the 6:04 mark in the first to take a 1-0 lead, the Eagles (6-12, 1-10 NEWHA) responded with a goal from freshman Jenna Abeyta who took a pass from Brumfield and took a point blank shot at the net, putting the puck past Sacred Heart goalie Frankie Sanchez to tie the game, 1-1. It was Abeyta's team-leading ninth goal of the season.
However, the Pioneers would score the next seven goals, including five in the third to make it an 8-1 game.
Brumfield would score at the 19:41 mark in the third, taking a pass on a breakaway from freshman Natalie Sammons to make it an 8-2 game.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday in Shelton with Sacred Heart designated as the home team. The puck drops at 1 p.m.
Storm, Baumgartner Honored
Senior Jenna Baumgartner and freshman Sadie Storm were honored as Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week honors, after their performance during the week of November 24-30.
In a 5-0 win over Neumann on November 26, Baumgartner had 33 saves, her second straight game with a shutout. It is the second consecutive week she has been honored as she shared the award the previous week with teammate, sophomore Kaitlyn Daly.
Storm took home Rookie of the Week honors after scoring two goals, including the game winner in the win over Neumann. She finished the game with a plus-3 rating. It was the second straight week an Eagles player has won the award as Abeyta won the previous week.
