Waterbury, Conn. – Sophomore Devonte McCall scored 18 points and the Post University men's basketball team used a big second half rally to defeat Bloomfield, 83-75 for their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win of the season on Wednesday evening.
After Bloomfield opened up the second half with a 28-10 run to take a 54-52 lead, sophomore Isaiah Holmes got the Eagles their lead back hitting a three to give Post a 55-54 lead. One they wouldn't relinquish, but fought very hard to keep, the rest of the way.
The Eagles extended its lead to 69-62 at the 5:34 mark after a tip-in from McCall. But a three-pointer by Bloomfield's Rich Chapman and two free-throws from Safee Abdus-Sabur would cut the Eagles lead to 69-67.
Post had a 75-70 lead before Chapman hit another three for Bloomfield to make it a 75-73 game. But on the ensuing possession, sophomore D.J. Frechette was fouled on a made jumper and made the free-throw as the Drubner Center erupted as the Eagles took a 78-73 lead.
With the Eagles leading 78-75, Bloomfield's Matt Lajueunesse missed a layup which senior Savion Boissard grabbed leading to a dunk from McCall and a foul on Bloomfield. McCall would sink the free throw and make two more with 11 seconds left to seal the win. McCall would score the final five points of the game for Post.
The Eagles looked poised to run away with the game after the first half, taking a 42-26 lead going into the break and leading by as much as 19 points. The Eagles hit five of their 15 threes in the half, and caused Bloomfield to commit 11 turnovers to help extend the lead. Eight different players scored for the Eagles in the first half with sophomore Abdul-Basit Ajia leading the way with nine.
Post dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 25 offensive rebounds, leading to 24 second chance points. The Eagles also converted Bloomfield's 15 turnovers into 17 points.
Boissard finished with 13 points, Frechette had 14 and Ajia had 11.
Chapman led Bloomfield with 25 points on 5-for-10 shooting from three.
Up next, the Eagles will play on the road at Concordia at 3 p.m. on December 21.
