Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Junior Darrick Boyd scored 18 points and hit five three-pointers, but the Post University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 78-76 overtime thriller to Molloy on Tuesday evening for their first loss of the season.
Sophomore D.J. Frechette finished with 15 points and senior Savion Boissard scored 14. Classmate Marcus Johnson had seven points and 13 rebounds.
With the Eagles (4-1) leading 76-73 in overtime, Molloy's Colin Brady hit a three to tie the game at 76-76 with 14 seconds left. A turnover and foul by the Eagles put Nick Corbett at the line, who sank two free throws to give the Lions the 78-76 lead with four seconds left.
The Eagles had a 32-24 lead after the first half, largely in part to a 14-5 run midway through the frame. With the Eagles leading 10-8 at the 14:19 mark, a three by sophomore Abdul-Basit Ajia started the rally for Post.
Frechette, junior Jonathan Duvivier and Boyd would hit three straight leads to give the Eagles their biggest lead of the half at 24-13. Molloy cut the lead to 24-20 before three straight layups from freshman Harrison Warnock, seniors D.J. Jarrett and Johnson made it a double digit lead again at 30-20.
In the second half, the Eagles twice extended its lead back to ten points, before a 25-14 run from the Lions gave them a brief 51-50 lead before a jumper from Frechette gave the lead back to Post. The Eagles would either be tied or lead for the half the rest of the way until the 1:06 mark, where a layup from Nick Corbett gave Molloy the lead. However, Boyd would sink a free-throw with 20 seconds left to tie the game to get into overtime.
