Seniors Shine On Their Day As Women’s Volleyball Defeats Wilmington

Waterbury, Conn. – Seniors Michelle Stublarec and Shannon Veale each had 17 kills and Ann Marie Nelson had seven blocks as the Post University women's volleyball team defeated Wilmington, 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13) in a wild Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day.

Post has now won three of its last four matches.

After dropping the first set, the Eagles staved off match point in a back and forth set two as the two teams swapped leads seven times. With the Eagles down 24-23, Nelson, Veale and junior Elizabeth McGrath had kills on three straight points to give the Eagles the 26-24 win. Veale had six kills in the set, and Stublarec and Nelson each had three.

Set three saw the Eagles jump out to a 12-5 lead and never looked back. Veale had three kills during the opening run. Wilmington closed the gap to 14-13, but a 7-2 run to take a 21-15 lead ruined any chance of a Wildcats comeback.

Post had an early 11-7 lead in set four before a 5-0 run from Wilmington gave the Wildcats the 12-11 lead. The two teams traded the next 19 points, but Wilmington scored four of the final five points to tie the match at 2-2. Stublarec had three kills and a block in the set.

In the fifth and decisive set, Wilmington jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the Eagles rattled off three points to cut the deficit to one, including a block by Stublarec and a kill from Nelson. Again, the Eagles snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as they rattled off four straight points and went from being down 12-10 to winning 15-13. Senior Caitlyn Cornish started the final rally with a kill and Veale ended it with one.

McGrath finished with 48 assists. Freshman Jayda Roman had 20 digs and junior Suzy Boulay had 19. Cornish finished with four kills and three blocks.

The Eagles will wrap up their season on Wednesday with a home match against Concordia at 7 p.m.
