Waterbury, Conn. – Junior Elizabeth McGrath had a career-high 49 assists and classmate Jayda Roman had a career-high 15 kills, but the Post University women's volleyball team lost a tough 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 10-25, 15-3) match to Caldwell on Tuesday evening in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match (CACC).
Set 1
The Cougars jumped out to an 11-1 lead before the Eagles rallied to close the gap to within three points at 24-21. Down 22-14, the Eagles used two kills from senior Ann Marie Nelson, one by senior Shannon Veale and another by McGrath along with an ace from Aniya Goodman to cut the deficit before Caldwell won the set on a kill from Chloe Kissner.
Set 2
Caldwell started out with an 8-2 lead before the Eagles rallied to make it a 10-7 game. It was the closest the set would be the rest of the way. Roman had two kills. Goodman, Veale and senior Michelle Stublarec each had one.
Set 3
The Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never trailed. They opened up with three straight kills from Nelson, Stublarec and Roman. Roman had seven kills in the set, including the final point of the set. With the Eagles holding a slim 15-14 lead, they rattled off a 7-1 run, that included two of Roman's kills along with another two by Veale to help put the set away.
Set 4
In the fourth, the Eagles withstood an early 8-2 run from the Cougars and rallied for the set win. With the Cougars holding a 19-16 lead, Veale led the charge with three kills in the deciding 9-1 run that ended with a kill from McGrath, who had two kills herself in the set.
Set 5
With the set tied, 2-2, Caldwell scored 11 straight points to put the match away.
Elsie Smith led Caldwell with 15 kills. Samantha Ashton had 38 assists for the Cougars.
