Waterbury, Conn. – It was a day to remember for reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, Sergio Diaz as the junior recorded a hat trick and assisted on another goal in a 4-1 win over first place Concordia on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
The Eagles, ranked fourth in the East Region in the United Soccer Coaches rankings are now 6-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the CACC. They are unbeaten in their last seven games (6-0-1).
Diaz got the scoring going in the 26th minute as he dribbled down the middle of the field cut to his left and struck it past the defense and Concordia goalkeeper Mikael Varin to make it a 1-0 game.
Concordia's defense didn't get a minute to breathe as just 43 seconds later, Diaz took a pass from sophomore Sergio Sanchez just outside the box and struck it past Varin again, making it a 2-0 game.
In the 40th minute, junior Alvaro Sanchez got in on the scoring action. Diaz went streaking down the right sideline, cut in and with Varin out of position passed the ball to Sanchez who kicked while falling with a defender draped on him to make it a 3-0 game. It'd be the lead the Eagles would take into the half.
The second half was scoreless until Alessandro Battaglia of Concordia scored in the 85th minute to make it a 3-1 game.
However, Diaz put his stamp on the game one last time. This time he bent a free kick around a three man wall and into the right side of the net for his third goal of the game and eighth of the season. He is now second in the CACC in goals, and first in assists.
Sophomore David Mollenthial finished the game with six saves.
The Eagles will host Chestnut Hill at 1 p.m. at LaMoy Field.
