Brookville, N.Y. – Junior Shannon Veale (Toms River, N.J.) and senior Madison Hunziker (Sacramento, Calif.) each had ten kills and Brianna Root had 31 assists as the Post University women's volleyball team swept Assumption, 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-20) at the Long Island Invitational Sunday afternoon at LIU-Post. The Eagles dropped its second game of the Invitational to LIU-Post, 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-16).
In the first match against Assumption, the Eagles went on a 15-5 run to close out the first set after the teams were tied 10-10, including the final six points. Veale had five kills during the run, with four of them coming over the last six points of the set.
The second set saw the Eagles score the first five points as Post was never threatened. The five point run was overshadowed by another seven point run in the set by the Eagles as their lead increased from 18-7 to 24-7 in a blink of an eye. Senior Sarah Seger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had two kills in the run.
The third set saw Veale and freshman Rylie Arms (Gilbert, Arizona.) each with four kills and the Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back as they closed out the match for their first win of the season.
Veale finished with 11 digs. Root had ten.
Against LIU-Post, the Eagles took the first set against the host team, 25-23, overcoming a 20-12 deficit and closing out with a 13-3 run. During the run, Hunziker had three kills, sophomore Ashley Levatino (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Veale had two.
In the second set, the Eagles held an early 5-3 lead before the Pioneers finished with a 22-12 run. LIU-Post jumped out to a 15-4 lead in set three before the Eagles closed the deficit to 22-16 with a 12-7 run of their own. Veale had three kills during the run before the Pioneers closed out the set.
In set four, the two teams were tied at 12-12 before a 13-4 run from the Pioneers ended the match.
Arms and Hunziker each had 11 kills. Senior Brianna Root (Bristol, Conn.) led all players with 34 assists. Hunziker's 29 Digs led all players.
Up next for the Eagles is a road game at the University of New Haven on September 4 at 7 p.m.
