Philadelphia, Pa.– Senior Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) broke the Post University baseball school record for wins to highlight a doubleheader sweep of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe University of the Sciences, 3-0 and 13-3 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Arnold now has 17 in his career, breaking the school record previously held by Tim McCarthy (2007-2010).
Arnold – who is 4-2 on the season - pitched six innings, giving up no runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four as the Eagles' bats scored early and often and jumped out to a 13-0 lead to begin game two.
The Eagles (14-10, 6-2 CACC) got on the board in the second inning, as freshman Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) hit a bases loaded triple to drive in classmate Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.), and juniors John Cartagena, Jr. (Danbury, Conn.) and Tyler Pavone (River Vale, N.J.) to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Pavone and Cartagena hit back-to-back singles, followed by a walk from Goehrig before Di Marzo's hit. Senior Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) drove in the other run in the inning on an RBI single that plated Di Marzo.
Di Marzo again was the driving force behind the offense in the third, doubling down the right field line to score Cartagena and Goehrig making it a 6-0 game. Sophomore Jared Zima (Berlin, Conn.) then drove in two on a sacrifice bunt that scored Di Marzo and Goehrig.
Post put the game out of reach in the fourth as an RBI double by Pavone, an RBI single from Cartagena and a two-run triple by Goehrig gave the Eagles a 12-0 lead and put away any doubt about the outcome.
Di Marzo finished the game going 2-for-5 with five RBI and two runs. Pavone was 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs. Goehrig was 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBI and two runs. Cartagena was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
A dominating group effort on the mound gave the Eagles a 3-0 win in game two as the pitching staff combined to strike out ten batters in the win.
Junior Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, N.J.) struck out six in three innings, Goehrig struck out two in four innings and junior Mike Munson (Plainville, Conn.) struck out two in two innings in the two-hit shutout. Kovalewich struck out at least two batters in all three innings he pitched.
The Eagles scored in the top of the second inning on a wild pitch that plated John Russo who singled with no outs. In the fourth, a fielder's choice by freshman Connor Kolich (Mahwah, N.J.) scored Di Marzo to make it a 2-0 game. In the seventh, a single from Russo and a subsequent throwing error by USciences (5-14, 2-6 CACC) on the play scored Pavone.
Cartagena Jr. finished the game 2-for-4. Russo was 2-for-3 with a run.
