WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team won its fourth straight game with a sweep over Chestnut Hill in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at LaMoy Field on Saturday. The Eagles are now 8-2 in CACC play, their best start since 2003, the last time they won the conference championship.
Game One – Post 10, Chestnut Hill 2, F/5
Chestnut Hill got off to a great start in game one as the first four batter reached base to put the Griffin in front 2-0. Junior
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) struck out the side to get the Eagles out of the jam.
Post put up seven runs in the second to grab control. Junior
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) smacked a base hit up the middle to begin the frame. Errors by the Griffins allowed her to score. Freshman
Brittany Giordano (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) singled to center to load the bases with no outs. Junior
Kailyn Biello (Watertown, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to bring home the tying run.
After a flyout, sophomore
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) put the Eagles in front for good with a base hit to right. Sophomore
Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) cleared the bases as she crushed a triple over the head of the rightfielder to extend the Post lead to 6-2. Senior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) drove her in with a single up the middle.
The Eagles added two in the third as freshman
Megan McCormack (Franklin Square, N.Y.) led the inning off with a double to right. She came home on another fielding miscue by the Griffins.
Leyri Rivera made the score 9-2 with a double to left. She finished with two hits and two RBI in the game.
Demi Rivera hit a solo shot to right field to start the fourth. After a leadoff walk in the fifth, freshman
Leigha Goldsack (Rutherford, N.J.) sat the Griffins down in order and a double-play gave Post the victory.
Game Two – Post 6, Chestnut Hill 3
Post used another high-scoring second inning to grab momentum in game two.
Demi Rivera, senior
Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.), and McCormack all singled to start the inning. Back-to-back errors led to the first two runs. Freshman
Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in the third run on a base hit to right. Two more miscues put the Eagles in front 5-0.
McCormack hit a triple through the right side with one out in the third. Freshman
Bridget Betley (Fairfield, N.J.) brought her home with a single to left as Post led 6-0 through three.
Betley held Chestnut Hill hitless over the first 3.1 innings of the day. After a one-out walk in the fourth, Lily Winn doubled down the line in left for the Griffins' first hit and run of the day. They would score two more in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 6-3. Goldsack entered in relief once again and tossed the final 1.1 to earn her first save.
Betley struck out seven on the day as she picked up her first-career win.
The Eagles get a day off and a return to action on Monday at home against Dominican. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
