Waterbury, Conn.– Freshman Jose Vasquez (New York, N.Y.) hit a game winning RBI single in game one and classmate Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) followed up with a game winning sacrifice fly in game two as the Eagles won 3-2 and 7-6 in walk-off fashion against Dominican in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader.
With the sweep, the Eagles take over first place in the CACC North Division. They are 22-18 overall and 14-10 in the CACC.
With two outs and the game tied, 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth of game one, junior Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) walked to begin the rally. After advancing on a wild pitch, Goehrig followed with a walk of his own, setting the stage for Vasquez, who singled to left, scoring Missiti, who beat the throw to the plate for the thrilling victory.
Post fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first before immediately answering with two of their own in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by junior John Cartagena Jr. (Danbury, Conn.), that scored senior Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) and senior Brendon Emigholz (West Islip, N.Y.).
Junior Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, N.J.) got the start and pitched six innings, and struck out six. Sophomore Tyler Boisvert (Prospect, Conn.) got the win in relief, pitching two innings and striking out two.
Vasquez went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Cartagena went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk.
In game two, after Dominican scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead, Cartagena started another late inning rally for the Eagles with a walk. Freshman Connor Kolich (Mahwah, N.J.) would then reach on a bunt single before Missiti singled to score Cartagena to tie the game, 6-6 and advancing Kolich to third base. Goehrig, the do it all freshman stepped to the plate and hit a deep drive to centerfield, easily scoring Kolich to give the Eagles the 7-6 win.
Post got on the board early, as an RBI triple in the first inning from Missiti scored Kolich to make it a 1-0 lead for the Eagles. Goehrig then followed with an RBI single to score Missiti, making a 2-0 game.
After Dominican scored two runs to tie the game in the top of the third, the Eagles answered with two of their own, this time it was Vasquez driving in two runs with a triple to put Post up 4-2. The Eagles added one more in the bottom of the fifth to take the 5-2 lead on an error on the catcher.
Dominican (14-29, 12-14 CACC) added a run in the top of the sixth before rallying to take a one run lead, capped by an RBI walk by Justin Decker.
Missiti went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Goehrig was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
Starting senior Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) pitched five innings, striking out six and giving up two earned runs. Junior Mike Munson (Plainville, Conn.) pitched two innings of relief and earned the win, while striking out four and giving up four runs, two of them earned.
Up next for the Eagles is senior day and a CACC doubleheader against Jefferson, beginning at noon on April 28.
