Eagles Fall to Mercy in Home Finale

Four regular season games left for Post softball

WATERBURY, Conn.  – The Post University softball team was swept by Mercy in its final non-conference doubleheader and home finale on Monday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles fell 5-2 in the opener and 13-0 in game two.

Game One – Mercy 5, Post 3
The Mavericks batted around in the first inning as they scored five runs on six hits and an error. The first six batters all reached to start the game before a pitching change by the Eagles.

Post got two runs back in the second as freshman Avery Kelly (New Milford, Conn.) crushed a homer to deep left. The home run also plated senior Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) who singled to start the inning.

Sophomore Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) doubled to left to begin the third inning. Classmate Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Sophomore Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) drove home Devorin as she grounded into a fielder's choice to make the score 5-3.

The Eagles nearly added another run in the fourth as freshman Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled to right, but Selimovski was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second.

Freshman Leigha Goldsack (Rutherford, N.J.) was stellar in relief, throwing seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out five.

Game Two – Mercy 13, Post 0, F/5
Post managed just two baserunners and one hit in game two. Mercy scored five in the second, two in the third, and six in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Leyri Rivera reached on an error to third to begin the second inning but was quickly erased by a double play. Petrie had the Eagles' lone hit in the fourth on an infield single. She advanced on second on a wild pitch, but Post was never able to bring her home.

The Eagles visit Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) leader Caldwell on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
