WILMINGTON, Del. – The Post University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at East Region No. 7 Wilmington on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles finish the regular season on Sunday at Caldwell.
Game One – Wilmington 5, Post 3
Neither team could manage a hit over the first two innings. Wilmington was down to its final out in the third when Rosa'Lynn Burton homered down the line in right for the first run of the game. After two more hits, a double by Makayla McCarthy made the score 3-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
The Eagles staged a two-out rally of its own in the fourth. Senior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) walked and freshman
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) followed with a two-run homer to left center to cut the deficit to 3-2.
An RBI double by Burton in the bottom of the inning extended the Wilmington lead back out to 4-2. Freshman
Brittany Giordano (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) smacked a solo shot to left-center to bring the Eagles back within one in the fifth. Post threatened to pull closer as the next two batters singled, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Wilmington scored a run on an error in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-3. Post managed just one batter in the final two innings and was unable to come back.
Game Two – Post 3, Wilmington 1
Demi Rivera walked to begin the second inning and later scored on an RBI single by freshman
Megan McCormack (Franklin Square, N.Y.). Two batters later the Eagles added another run as senior
Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) scored on an error to put Post in front 2-0.
Freshman
Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on an error with one out in the third. Schaffer followed with a double to left center to extend the Post lead out to 3-0. With the hit, Schaffer surpassed head coach
Tracey Garofalo for third all-time with 184 career hits.
Wilmington added a run on a double in the fifth. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman
Leigha Goldsack (Rutherford, N.J.) shut the side down in order from there to earn her CACC-leading fourth save of the year.
Betley tossed the first five innings, allowing just one run and two strikeouts to pick up the win.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow on the road at first-place Caldwell. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
