WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team grabbed a split with Jefferson in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at LaMoy Field on Sunday afternoon. Senior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) recorded two hits on the day and is now tied for third-place all time with head coach
Tracey Garofalo with 183 in her career.
Game One – Post 4, Jefferson 3
Bats were quiet for most of game one as each team had just two hits over the first five innings. Schaffer walked with two outs in the first and freshman
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) doubled to center to bring home a run.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of Post until the bottom of the sixth as sophomore
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) tripled to shallow right center and scored on an errant throw to extend the lead to 2-0. The Eagles added two more runs on back-to-back RBI singles by freshmen
Megan McCormack (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
Brittany Giordano (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) to go ahead 4-0.
Post needed the big sixth inning as Jefferson scored three runs on four hits in the seventh to get back into the game, but a groundout ended the threat and gave the Eagles the victory.
Demi Rivera pitched a gem until the seventh and finished with a complete game, allowing three runs, six hits, and striking out four to earn her second win of the year.
Game Two – Jefferson 5, Post 4
A leadoff double by the Rams led to a run in the first. Sophomore
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) and
Leyri Rivera each legged out infield singles to the shortstop to begin the third. Schaffer tied the score on a base hit to the right side.
Demi Rivera followed with a single to center to put the Eagles in front. Two batters later McCormack gave Post a 3-1 lead with her second hit of the game.
Jefferson took the lead back in the top of the fourth as it scored four runs with two outs to jump in front 5-3. The Eagles added a run in the sixth, but the comeback stalled as they were sat down in order on just four pitches in the seventh.
Freshman
Bridget Betley (Fairfield, N.J.) tossed the first 3.2, allowing five runs and five hits as she fell to 3-4 on the year. Classmate
Leigha Goldsack (Rutherford, N.J.) three the final 3.1 giving up just one hit and striking out three.
