Bats Come Alive In Sweep Of Caldwell

Waterbury, Conn.– The Post University baseball team had the bats going in game one and the late inning heroics going in game two as it swept Caldwell, 15-10 and 3-2 on Friday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup.

In game one, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead and answered a seven inning rally by Caldwell in the seventh in the win.

Juniors Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) and John Russo (Bronx, N.Y.) each drove in runs with RBI singles in the bottom of the first before freshman Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) doubled to score Russo.

After Caldwell scored on an RBI single in the top of the fourth, the Eagles rallied with four more of their own in the bottom of the inning as Missiti hit another RBI single to score senior Brendon Emigholz (West Islip, N.Y.). After a double steal that saw freshman Mike Lisinicchia (Stamford, Conn.) steal home, classmate Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) reached on an error scoring Missiti to make it a 6-1 game. Di Marzo would drive one more in on a fielder's choice.

Caldwell scored two in the top of the fifth as the Eagles answered with one of their own to make it an 8-3 game. The Eagles put the game, at the time, out of reach scoring three in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run single by Emigholz to make it a 10-3 game. Missiti tacked on another RBI with a bases loaded walk to give the Eagles an 11-3 lead.

The Cougars, however, put seven runs on the board in the top of the seventh as Kevin Goldman hit a two-run double to make it an 11-5 game. After back to back wild pitches that scored runs, Rob DeSanti singled to right to drive in a run. A bases loaded walk and a hit-by-pitch drove in the final two runs in the inning to cut the Eagles lead to 11-10.

In the bottom of the seventh, Emogholz drove in Russo – who singled - and sophomore Kwan Jones (Easthampton, N.J.) (pinch runner) to make it a 13-10 game. After freshman Connor Kolich (Mahwah, N.J.) walked, Lisinicchia put the game away for good with a two-run triple to drive in Kolich and Emigholz.

Lisnicchia finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. Russo was 5-for-6 with three runs and an RBI. Emigholz was 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI. Missiti finished 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.

In game two, with the game tied, 2-2, Emigholz hit a single to left. After an errant throw on the play in left field Di Marzo scored from second base for the eventual game winner. Di Marzo walked to begin the inning.

The Eagles started where they left off as their hot bats continued in the bottom of the firsts as Missiti singled to left to score Kolich after Kolich singled to lead off the inning. After Missiti stole third base two batters later, Goehrig singled to left to score Missiti.

Caldwell (4-30, 4-18) scored a run in both the third and fifth innings.

Senior Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) pitched seven inning complete game for the Eagles (18-6, 10-8 CACC), giving up two runs – one earned – on four hits and two walks while striking out four. He is 6-2 on the season.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday with a CACC road doubleheader at noon.
