WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team picked up a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep over Nyack on a cold afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles took game one 9-4 and battled from behind for a 7-6 win in eight innings in game two.
Freshman
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) was 7-for-8 with four doubles, a triple, and six RBI. She also threw two shutout innings in game two to earn her first-career pitching victory. Sophomore
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.) had four hits, none more important than a walk-off single in the finale.
Game One – Post 9, Nyack 4
Nyack opened the scoring in game one as a single by Gabrielle Placencia plated one in the second. Rivera singled to being the fourth and back-to-back errors by the Warriors loaded the bases. Freshman
Avery Kelly (New Milford, Conn.) and junior
Kailyn Biello (Watertown, Conn.) drew walks as Post pulled ahead 2-1.
With two outs in the fourth, sophomore
Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) drove in a run with a base knock to left. Senior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to extend the lead to 4-1. Rivera smacked a double to center to plate two more as Post led 6-1.
A two-run home by Nyack cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth, but senior
Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) answered with a solo shot to begin the bottom of the inning. Devorin made the score 8-3 with a sac fly to right field. Rivera drove home the final Eagles' run with a triple to right field in the sixth.
Junior
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) picked up her sixth win of the year, tossing five innings allowing three runs while striking out four.
Game Two – Post 7, Nyack 6, F/8
Demi Rivera continued to swing a hot bat in game two as she put the Eagles ahead 2-0 in the first on a double to left. The first three Nyack batters reached to start the second as the Warriors trimmed the deficit to 2-1. Koref launched a bomb off the scoreboard in right field with one out in the third to make the score 3-1 in favor of Post. Nyack add a run in the fourth and scored twice with two outs in the fifth to jump ahead 4-3.
Rivera and Selimovski each singled through the left side to put the Eagles back in front in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman
Megan McCormack (Franklin Square, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-4. Nyack once again did damage with two outs in the sixth to tie the game. Rivera hit a two-out double in the seventh to put the winning run in scoring position but was stranded as the game went to extras. She sat the Warriors down in order in the eighth.
Kelly singled to center to start the bottom. Freshman
Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a double to left and advanced to third as pinch runner sophomore
Ashley Andes (Seymour, Conn.) was thrown out at home trying to score the winning run. Devorin followed and smacked an 0-2 pitch up the middle to give the Eagles a 7-6 win.
The Eagles visit Felician tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
