Late-Inning Heroics Lead Softball to Sweep of Goldey-Beacom

Selimovski hits tying homer, walk-off single in game one

WATERBURY, Conn.  – The Post University softball team picked up a sweep over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) for Goldey-Beacom on Friday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles came from behind in both games of the series, taking game one 4-3 in eight innings and game two 4-2.

Senior Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with four RBI on the day, including a game-tying three-run homer and walk-off single in game one. Freshman Megan McCormack (Franklin Square, N.Y.) had a double and home run in game two with two RBI. Classmate Leigha Goldsack (Rutherford, N.J.) tossed 3.1 innings out of the pen in both games, allowing just one hit while striking out three. She earned a win and a save.

Game One – Post 4, Goldey-Beacom 3, F/8
Bats were quiet on both sides over the first four innings with a Schaffer single in the bottom of the fourth as the only hit on either side. Goldey-Beacom loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but a popup and a strikeout by junior Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) ended the threat.

Four of the first batters for the Lightning singled to start the seventh as they took a 1-0 lead. After a pitching change, an error and walk made the score 3-0.

Schaffer doubled to center to begin the home half of the seventh. Freshman Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) followed with a base hit to right. Selimovski launched a homer to center to send the game into extra innings. Goldey-Beacom put two on with two outs in the eighth, but the Eagles got out of the inning unscathed.

Sophomore Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) singled with two out in the eight and Schaffer followed with a base hit of her own. A walk to Rivera loaded the bases and Selimovski played the hero again as she smacked a base hit to center to drive home the winning run.

Game Two – Post 4, Goldey-Beacom 2
Goldey-Beacom pulled in front 1-0 in the first as a run came home on a double play and added another run in the second on an Eagles' error. McCormack cut the lead in half with a solo shot to centerfield to begin the bottom of the second.

Schaffer doubled and scored on a passed ball to knot the score at 2-2 in the third. Sophomore Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) put the Eagles in front as she tripled in the fourth to bring home freshman Bridget Betley (Fairfield, N.J.) who reached on a walk.

McCormack extended Post's lead to 4-2 in the fifth on a double to centerfield. The Lightning put on two runners with one out in the sixth, but Goldsack shut them down the rest of the way to pick up her second save of the year.

Betley threw the first 5.1 allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Post returns to action on Monday afternoon at New Haven. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m.
