Game Recap: Baseball |

Eagles Sweep Concordia Behind Late-Hitting Heroics And Dominating Pitching

Waterbury, Conn. – Junior Tyler Pavone (River Vale, N.J.) hit a walk off single in game one and senior Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) dominated on the mound in game two as the Post University baseball team swept Concordia, 7-6 and 11-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

With the Eagles (12-10, 4-2 CACC) down 6-5 in game one, senior Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) led off the inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jose Vasquez (New York, N.Y.) moved Wright to second, freshman Connor Kolich (Mahwah, N.J.) hit a ball that slowly rolled down the first base line and stayed fair and advanced Wright to third before senior Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Wright would then score on a wild pitch from Enrico Locaseio to tie the game. After junior Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) walked, Pavone came home and ripped a shot to center field to score Kolich for the win as the team celebrated on the field.

Early on in the game, Concordia took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Eagles answered with five of their own in a one out rally. After Pavone reached on an error and junior John Cartagena, Jr. (Danbury, Conn.) singled, junior John Russo (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to score Pavone to put the Eagles on the board. After freshman Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) drew a walk, Wright hit a two run single to score Di Marzo, Russo and Cartagena to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Vasquez reached on an error to score Wright to give the Eagles the 5-3 lead.

Concordia scored two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth before Pavone's heroics.

Wright finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Pavone was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Cartagena Jr. was 3-for-3 with a run. He also drew a walk.

In game two, Arnold pitched a complete game shutout and struck out six in the 11-0 win.

After scoring one run in the bottom of the first, the Eagles tacked on three more in the third inning as Missiti singled to score a run before Di Marzo and sophomore Jared Zima (Berlin, Conn.) both drew bases loaded walks to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.

Post tacked on one more run in the fourth, and blew open the game in the bottom of the fifth scoring five runs which was capped by a Missiti two-run single that scored freshman Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) and Kolich.

Kolich finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs. Missiti was 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI. Vasquez scored two runs.

Up next for the Eagles is a CACC home doubleheader against Chestnut Hill on April 2 beginning at noon.
