WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Bridgeport on Monday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles fell 16-6 in the opener but won 14-5 in five innings in game two.
Game One – Bridgeport 16, Post 6
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Eagles tied the game in the bottom as freshman
Geanna Serechia (Hammonton, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the tying run. Bridgeport added runs in the second and third to pull back in front 3-1.
Senior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) singled to start the third and advanced into scoring position on wild pitch. Senior
Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) brought her home on a line drive to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Purple Knights put the game out of reach with five runs on three hits and three walks in the fourth inning, pulling ahead 8-2. Freshman
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) grabbed two runs back in the bottom as she launched a home run to left. Bridgeport earned both runs back in the fifth to lead 10-4. Schaffer smacked a two-run shot in the sixth for the Eagles' final runs. The Purple Knights added six more in the seventh.
Schaffer was 3-for-4 with a two RBI and three runs scored. Rivera and Selimovski each had two hits as well.
Game Two – Post 14, Bridgeport 5, F/5
Freshman
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) doubled to left field to open the bottom for the first. After a groundout advanced her to third, Schaffer drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Selimovski reached on a dropped fly ball in left field and two runs came home as the Eagles led 2-0 through one. Sophomore
Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) hit a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0 in the second.
Bridgeport doubled home two runs and scored on a runner caught stealing to trim the deficit to 4-3 in the third.
Post broke the game open with a six-run third inning capped by a grand slam by Koref. Freshman
Brittany Giordano (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) hit a ground-rule double and
Leyri Rivera singled up the middle to each drive in runs as well. The Eagles opened a 10-3 lead.
The first three Eagles reach based in the bottom of the fourth.
Demi Rivera singled up the middle and Selimovski followed with a base hit. Freshman
Megan McCormack (Franklin Square, N.Y.) drove both in on a double off the centerfield wall. Following a double by sophomore
Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del.), freshman
Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled to right as another run came home.
Leyri Rivera brought home the Eagles' final run on a groundout.
Bridgeport scored twice with two outs in the fifth but were unable to force the game to go on as Post recorded the run-rule victory.
Junior
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) earned the victory as she struck out two and allowed three runs in a 3.1 innings.
Post returns to action tomorrow on the road at Holy Family. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
