WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball swept its doubleheader against USciences on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field to begin Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play. The Eagles scored nine runs combined in the sixth inning to come from behind for both wins.
GAME ONE - Post 6, USciences 4
Game one started off well for Post as sophomore
Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J.) and senior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) each singled in the first. Senior
Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put Post in front 1-0. Sophomore
Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J.) drew a walk as the Eagles led 2-0 through an inning.
Base hits by Rivera and freshman
Brittany Giordano (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) setup the Eagles in the second. Schaffer launched a deep fly ball to center field and Rivera tagged up and scored from second as to put Post in front 3-0.
Freshman pitcher
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) shut the Devils down through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth as she allowed four runs to give USciences a 4-3 lead.
With two outs in the sixth, Schaffer doubled home
Leyri Rivera, who drew a walk to start the frame, tying the score.
Demi Rivera followed with a double of her own to right center to give Post the lead for good. She scored on a throwing error later in the inning to add an insurance run.
A double and an error put two runners in scoring position for USciences in the seventh. Freshman
Leigha Goldsack (Rutherford, N.J.) closed the door as struck out the side to give the Eagles the win. She earned her first-career victory as she struck out six, allowing just one hit and two walks in four innings of work.
Leyri Rivera and Schaffer each had three hits in the game.
GAME TWO – Post 7, USciences 5
The Devils put up five runs in the first inning capped by a three-run homer by Emily Torres. Post grabbed one run back in the second as
Demi Rivera reach on an error to start the inning and later score on a wild pitch.
Junior
Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass.) entered to pitch in the third and shut USciences down allowing just two hits while striking out four.
The Eagles' offense was unable to get anything going as they had just two hits through the first five innings but came alive in the sixth.
Freshman
Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the sixth off with an infield single and came home to score on a triple down the line by Schaffer.
Demi Rivera trimmed the deficit to 5-3 as she smacked a base hit to center. Selimovski followed with a base hit through the left side, forcing a pitching change for the Devils.
Freshman
Bridget Betley (Fairfield, N.J.) drove home a run on a base hit to right field to make the score 5-4. The Eagles tied the game as freshman
Megan McCormack (Franklin Square, N.Y.) reached on an error as the tying run came home. Back-to-back wild pitches completed the comeback allowing two more runs to score. Denis sat the Devils down in order in the seventh to earn the win.
The Eagles are back at home on Monday for a doubleheader against Bridgeport. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
