Cary, N.C. – The Post University baseball team earned its first two wins of the season in style, sweeping St. Augustine's 5-0 and 12-0 on Saturday evening in a non-conference matchup.
In game one, senior Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) drove in three runs – two on a two-run homer – to supply the offense for the day as junior Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, N.J.) and sophomore Tyler Boisvert (Prospect, Conn.) kept St. Augustine's bats quiet, giving up just five hits while striking out five.
Post got scored two runs in the first on an RBI groundout by junior John Russo (Bronx, N.Y.) that scored freshman Jose Vasquez (New York, N.Y.) and a bases loaded walk drawn by freshman Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) that scored Walsh.
With one out in the second, Vasquez singled and stole second. After a strikeout, Walsh homered to make it a 4-0 game. He would tack on a sacrifice fly that scored junior Brandon Escalante (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) in the top of the seventh.
Only one runner reached third base for St. Augustine. Boisvert took care of all seven batters he faced, not allowing anyone on base.
In game two, Di Marzo drovein three runs and freshman Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) reached base four times and drove in two runs while senior Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) and junior Brett Pisaneschi (East Quogue, N.Y.) combined for a two-hit shutout in a resounding win.
The Eagles got on the board early and often in the first inning as junior Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single that scored Vasquez. Walsh followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Missiti before Di Marzo's two run single broke the game open early for Post.
After tacking on one run in the fifth inning, the bats came alive again in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Goehrig drove in two runs on an RBI single and Di Marzo hit an RBI double to highlight the seven-run final inning. Sophomore Jared Zima (Berlin, Conn.), junior Tyler Pavone (River Vale, N.J.) and freshman Connor Kollich (Mahwah, N.J.) each had RBI singles in the inning.
On the hill, Arnold finished with nine strikeouts while walking just two. He had a strikeout in every inning.
The teams meet again Sunday in another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
