Eagles Complete Weekend Sweep Of Saint Augustine's

Cary, N.C. – A wild ninth inning followed by a hot start, propelled the Post University baseball team to a second consecutive doubleheader sweep of St. Augustine's, 3-2 and 7-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The two wins puts the Eagles over .500 for the season at 4-3.

In the top of the ninth in a scoreless game one, the Eagles scored three runs as the first four batters reached base before junior John Russo (Bronx, N.Y.) hit an RBI single down the right field line to score freshman Connor Kolich (Mahwah, N.J.) and senior Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. With freshman Danny Di Marzo (Fishkill, N.Y.) on third after a fielder's choice from junior John Cartegena Jr. (Danbury, Conn.), a passed ball by St. Augustine's would score Di Marzo for a third and important run for the Eagles giving them a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, St. Augustine's left the tying runner on first as junior Mike Munson (Plainville, Conn.) struck out Ruben Pinero to end the game. Two errors and a steal of home helped St. Augustine's get on the board before the strikeout.

The story of the game was the starting pitching for the Eagles. Freshman Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out six in seven innings. Munson pitched the final two innings, giving up two runs on a hit and three walks while striking out three.

Four times Goehrig pitched 1-2-3 innings during the game and twice struck out two batters in the inning.

Amlicar Yanez pitched six scoreless innings for St. Augustine's, striking out five while walking four and giving up two hits. Guzman got the loss for St. Augustine's while Munson got credit for the win.

In game two, the Eagles scored big in the first and third innings for a 7-2 win.

With one out and two on in the top of the first, junior Tyler Pavone (River Vale, N.J.) hit an RBI single that scored freshman Jose Vasquez (New York, N.Y.) who reached on an error to begin the game. After a bunt by Wright made the bases loaded, Russo hit a double down the left field line to score Pavone and senior Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) and make it a 3-0 game. An RBI groundout by Cartagena Jr. tacked on the final run for the inning.

St. Augustine's would score one run each in the first and second innings, but the Eagles would respond with three runs of their own in the top of the inning highlighted by an error by St. Augustine third baseman XYZ off the bat of Cartagena that scored Wright and Pavone. Pavone reached on an error in the inning which was followed by a single from Wright.

Post's bullpen held St. Augustine's scoreless the rest of the way as freshman Mike Lisinicchia (Stamford, Conn.), senior Enzo Esposito (Hamilton, N.J.) and freshman Dan Raglievich (Dumont, N.J.) combined to pitch five scoreless relief, giving up just one hit and striking out four.
