Winston-Salem, N.C. – Junior Rosario Missiti (Belmont, Mass.) scored two runs and the Eagles held a three-run lead, but in the end fell to Winston-Salem State, 4-3 in a non-conference baseball game on Monday afternoon.
The Eagles got on the board early in the top of the first as a single by senior Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.) drove in Missiti for the first run of the game. Missiti had gotten on base via a walk and advanced to third on a single by senior Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) to set up Wright.
In his next at-bat in the top of the third, Walsh would drive in a run, on a single to second base that scored freshman Jose Vasquez (New York, N.Y.) and moved Missiti – who singled – to third base. Junior Evan Schaffner (Boynton Beach, Fla.) would then fly out in foul territory to right field, but it was deep enough to score Missiti to give the Eagles (0-3) a 3-0 lead.
The Rams answered in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Wellington Guzman. A passed ball by the Eagles allowed the Rams to tie it in the bottom of the fourth 3-3, and a fielder's choice off the bat of Nick Williams that scored Jaxon Snider would give WSSU (4-4) the lead for good.
Missiti finished the game 3-for-4 to go with his two runs and a walk. Walsh finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Wright was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
Starting freshman pitcher Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) pitched four innings and struck out seven while giving up three runs – two earned on five hits and a walk. Junior Michael Munson (Plainville, Conn.) struck out three in 1.2 innings of relief.
Up next for the Eagles is a doubleheader against St. Augustine on February 24 in Cary, N.C.
